It was a privilege to be invited by the committee of the Chinese Society of Reproductive Medicine to speak at the opening of their 12th annual conference in Chongqing, China. It was the first time I had visited the country and it was an exciting event.

I was invited by their President Dr Guoning Huang and it was not surprising to find that the fertility issues faced by women in China are much the same as those in the rest of the world.

I visited a wonderful hospital and an IVF clinic where I was able to talk directly to women going through IVF and despite all our cultural and language barriers we found so much in common. It was also lovely to meet the doctors, nurses, embryologists and others who help infertile couples realise their dream in China.

I even got the chance to meet a tiny baby born through IVF just a few hours old. He gripped my finger from inside his cosy incubator. A special moment for me.
